Where We Go

Approximately 45 minutes drive south of Canmore along the Smith Dorien highway is the Spray Lake. This lake tucked away behind the ‘Goat’ mountain range bordering the East flank of Banff National Park presents you with some of the wildest areas in Kananaskis Country and the Rocky Mountains. It is here along its 24 Km length that ‘Mad Dogs’ offers most of our dog sled & ski-joring tours. This pristine wilderness area offers incredible mountain vistas for the photographer, and a winter playground for the outdoor enthusiast.

Here we share our trails with recreational mushers and other commercial operators. Due to park regulations we do not have as much flexibility for dog sledding as we do with ski-joring resulting in a busy trail at the North end of the Lake. This is usually typical until we have access on the lake come January and can be quite entertaining, offering a unique look at other types of huskies, sleds and operations on the trail. Once January has past us by, we have access onto the Spray Lake itself. Here we get to coast down the length of the lake on our half and full day outings. Rounding the comer on the lake you will see the mountains in their glory all around, it can get quite blustery at times which only adds to the effect of your winter ‘Arctic’ experience with the dogs. But an hour later you will be in the shelter of the trees heading to the en d of the trail for hot drinks and snacks. Our ski-joring tours have access to a few additional trails in the same vicinity of the Spray, some of which get a lot more snow earlier in the season giving us an earlier start.

Meeting Locations & Directions

We operate our dog sledding tours in two different locations. Please refer to the appropriate section for information about your tour.

  • This section includes information on meeting location, directions and other important information for the following tours:

*2 Days/ 1 Night starts at our kennel location.

    Meeting Location

Our trailhead for our Spray Lakes tours is an Alberta Parks designated site called the East Campsite. It is exactly 2.5 km past the Driftwood Boat Launch which is on the east side of the Spray Lakes. The pull-out is on the right hand side of the road when driving from Driftwood and the roadway going into the old campsite where the dog trucks park, goes down towards the lake, and is hard to see unless looking for it. The GPS coordinates are 50.969019,-115.318227. Please note: there is limited signage so milage is very important. The trailhead is exactly 2.5 km from the Driftwood sign. If you go further than that, you will need to turn around as you have missed it.

    Driving Directions to Trailhead

Directions: From Canmore, follow the signs to the Canmore Nordic Centre, then continue on highway 742 south (Spray Lakes Road/Smith Dorrien Highway). When you get to the end of the lake, where the Trans Alta Dam is and where the turn off for the West Campsite, make sure you continue straight on highway 742. Do not go across the Dam. As you continue down the east side of the lake, you will pass the Driftwood boat launch which is marked with a big blue sign. Exactly 2.5 km past the blue Driftwood sign, you will see the pull out/parking area on the right hand side of the road. It is marked with a small signpost. It is not a large sign unfortunatley, as parks will not let us put a large sign out, but if you start looking for it after you pass the West Winds trailhead (visible on the left hand side), you should see the sign and then dog trucks parked down a bit on the access road going from the pull out towards the lake. Park into the pull out as close as possible to the trucks ensuring you are off the main road (there is no road parking allowed on highway 742). Get dressed in your warm gear, then walk down towards the dog trucks. The guides will be there waiting for you.

Children

Children are allowed on tours where stipulated. Please see sled loading document for sled configurations to ensure that weight condiderations are adhered to.

Sled Loading

It is our policy to run sleds alternating with one guide driven sled followed by a client driven sled followed by a guide driven sled and so on. The number of client driven sleds will depend on the number and specifics of each tour. Sleds are tentatively loaded at time of booking and you will be offered either a client driven sled or guide driven sled depending on the availability of each at the time. Please be advised that this can change if numbers or conditions warrant it.

With Guide driven sleds, one adult would be in the bucket and the other would stand on the back to work with the guide to drive the sled. Clients will be allowed to switch positions during the tour if conditions are good. A third person is allowed if it is a youth or child. It must be understood that if on the back of the sled, there is a minimum amount of physicality required. It is possible for both adults to sit in the sled if spacing and weight considerations allow for it. If this is a requirement and we need to have a dedicated guide, an extra charge may apply.

On the Client driven sleds, we would prefer to have one adult in the sled and 2 adults on the back driving. A fourth is allowed if it is a youth or child. It must be understood that if on the back of the sled, there is a minimum amount of physicality required. You may need to push or run beside the sled at times. If unsure, please call office to confirm if this is right for you. Instruction will be given before heading out on the trail and you will remain under guide supervision at all times.

"Solo" & "Groups of 3" Considerations

On most tours, we have a solo rider price which would allow for one client with a guide. We do not allow solo riders on client driven sleds as we require at least 2 people on a sled at all times for safety reasons. As we do not mix groups, and you are by yourself and want to head out on a tour, you will be required to pay as a solo rider if you want to book ahead to ensure a spot. Occasionally, we may have a sled available at the trailhead that we can open up for a single rider at regular price but this cannot be confirmed until after 6pm the day before.

Groups of 3 adults can be booked on client driven sleds only otherwise, solo pricing would apply for the third person.

Transportation to Trailhead

Please note that we do not provide transportation. To our Boundary Ranch location, The only way to get to this location is to drive yourself. The road to Boundary Ranch is paved the whole way and as it is a secondary highway it is kept reasonably clear.

For Spray Lakes tours, please note that The Spray Lakes road is a secondary gravel road from just past the Canmore Nordic Centre to the trailhead. We ask that vehicles have a minimum of front-wheel drive and good all-season tires, but 4-wheel drive and winter tires is best in case of adverse weather conditions.

We do not offer any transportation to or from Banff. You would need to either hire a car

Waivers

Waivers are required before any participant can enter the dog area. These can be completed online prior to arriving. A link will be sent to you with your final confirmations. If you have trouble with this, we will have paper copies to fill out at the trailhead. PLease arrive early to complete these if you are not able to do the online option. 1 child can be included with one adult. If you have more children than adults, you will need to do another with the extra child.

Weight Considerations

You will be asked your approximate weight at time of booking. We allow a max of 250 lbs in the bucket (static weight) and up to 350 lbs maximum client weight (static + dynamic) for 2 people or 450 lbs for 3 people. Dynamic weight would be the client or clients on the back of the sled. When on the back, you will be required to assist with the driving of the sled and a minimum level of physicality is required. You need to be able to run alongside the sled and push the sled at times. If you are unsure, please call office to discuss if this is right for you.
