New! Fortress Mountain Adventure Tour
Dogsled through movie sets!
Experience the beauty of Fortress Mountain by dogsled. Once one of Alberta’s premier ski areas, Fortress Mountain now offers a popular cat-skiing operation and is a favorite location for many movie sets.
Movies filmed at Fortress
Alberta's dramatic landscapes have become some of Hollywood’s favourite filming locations. Here are some of the most famous: Inception, The Revenant, Cold Pursuit, The Bourne Legacy, Jumanji: The Next Level and many more.
This tour will begin with a shuttle from the base of the access road up to our trailhead at the base of the old ski area (approx 10 min). From here, you will ride in an all terrain vehicle to the start of the dogsled section. You will have an opportunity to meet the dogs, receive detailed instruction on what to expect on the tour and assist the guides with harnessing and setting up the teams if required. This is a new trail, built this year, for our dogsledding company. Here, you will enjoy terrain and views that many have not been able to see since 2004 except in the movies.
Spectacular views in all directions will seen along this trail that skirts around the now popular KPOW cat ski operation and back along the plateau of West Woody for approx. 10 km. This is a more physical tour with short sections of heavy pushing, longer sections of lighter pushing, downhills, and rest breaks along the way. Please note that this tour does require a bit more physicality than our other tours and is at a higher elevation (7000 ft approx). Hot chocolate, water and cookies will be served along the trail. Once back at the trailhead, you will be transferred back to the warm van by all-terrain vehicle and shuttled back to the parking area.

Guide Driven Sled (weight max. 350lbs)
We prefer to have one person on the back standing tandem with the guide and one sitting in the sled. 2 people can sit in the sled together if space and weight allow (static weight 250lbs in sled). If it is a requirement for both to be in the sled together and weight is over static max, please talk to office for approval. Extra charges may apply for dedicated guide.
The person on the back will be given instruction on how to guide the sled and may be asked to stand on brake when guide is working with the dogs or other clients. Younger children will be given a turn on the back if the guide feels it is safe to do so. It must be understood that the person on the back must have a minimum amount of physicality as they may need to push or run beside the sled at times. If unsure, please call the office to confirm if this is right for you.

The only way to get to the parking area at Fortress Mountain is to drive, there is no public transportation available into this area. It is a secondary highway and is cleared and maintained. Most vehicles can access this area but should have a min of front wheel drive and good all-season tires but winter tires are better. It would take approx 1 hour 20 min from Calgary, 45 min from Canmore, and 1 hour 10 min from Banff. Scroll down to view map and directions
